Department of Forensic Sciences Chosen to Appear on South Korean Television Show

Wednesday, January 21, 2015

Just like in the United States, TV shows such as the “CSI” franchise are a big hit in South Korea, spurring public interest in the forensic sciences.

The Korean Broadcasting System, similar to PBS in the US, decided to do a story on how forensic science really works and compare and contrast how it’s done in South Korea and the US KBS chose the District’s Department of Forensic Sciences – a science-based agency that operates independent of law enforcement – and its state-of-the-art Consolidated  Forensic Laboratory to illustrate the process in America.

On January 16, a three-person KBS crew visited the CFL for a three-hour shoot. Segments include an interview with Dr. Roger Mitchell, who heads the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner located in the CFL; an interview with DFS Director Dr. Max Houck; Forensic Scientist Laurel Hassberger working a mock crime scene and explaining her procedures; and shots of DNA Technician Andrew Feiter working in the lab.
